BRONX, N.Y. — Opening Day at Yankee Stadium had all the energy and drama fans could ask for, but the New York Yankees came up just short in a 7-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon.
The Yankees erased an early deficit with a four-run third inning and added two more in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead, highlighted by strong performances from several young stars. Anthony Volpe went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Jasson Domínguez collected two hits, two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs in an impressive season debut. Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. also homered for New York.
Milwaukee chipped away throughout the game before taking control late. Rhys Hoskins delivered a key three-run homer, while Christian Yelich and Garrett Mitchell each added home runs of their own. The Brewers exploded for three runs in the eighth inning to reclaim the lead and silence the Bronx crowd.
Bryan Hudson earned the win for Milwaukee after tossing a scoreless inning in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Fernando Cruz took the loss for New York.
Despite tallying 11 hits apiece, the Yankees were unable to hold their lead as Milwaukee capitalized on timely hitting and a late-game surge to spoil New York’s Opening Day celebration.
